Thermal Interface Material (TIM) Testers
The Analysis Tech TIM Testers are automated test systems that implement ASTM D5470 for the measurement of thermal resistance and conductivity on thin, thermally conductive materials. Materials most commonly tested with TIM Testers are of the type frequently used for electronic packaging, as well as a wide variety of flexible or rigid solids, and semi-liquid or viscous materials. Generally, these TIM Testers can accommodate samples with high-to-medium thermal conductivity with contact pressures ranging from 5 to 380 psi (50-2600 kpa), and at sample test temperatures ranging from 20°C to 130 °C. Phase change materials can also be tested using this equipment.
The specimen/sample-under-test is clamped between a pair of parallel conductive surfaces, one heated - one cooled, which imposes a measured heat-flow through the sample. The accurate measurement of the temperature difference across the sample and the induced heat-flow provides the basis for the thermal conductivity measurement. The average sample temperature and clamping contact pressure is automatically controlled based on user-selected values. The effect of contact pressure on themal performance is easily determined using pressure-batch mode testing.
