Spectra-LED: Complete Radiometric and Thermal Measurement System for LED Characterization
The Spectra-LED accessory for the Semiconductor Thermal Analyzer system combines spectral and radiometric measurement capabilities to the thermal characterization features of the Phase 12 Thermal Analyzer. Spectra-LED, specifically intended for LED testing, is comprised of an integrating sphere for collection of the LED radiant output, a sensitive broad band spectrometer, a temperature controlled test stage, and software for complete spectral analysis of the LED radiant emissions. As an accessory to the Phase 12 Thermal Analyzer, Spectra-LED provides the combined measurement and analysis of interrelated LED operational parameters, including junction temperature, electrical input power, and radiant emission. All thermal and radiometric measurements occur while the LED case/substrate temperature is simultaneously controlled. This breadth of measurement and analysis capability is harnessed with features of WinTherm Software for automatic control and measurement of transient and steady state LED testing.
Radiometric Measurement and Thermal Compensation
When testing LEDs, the total electrical energy supplied to the LED is divided between radiant emission and heat dissipation. This contrasts with other types of semiconductor devices where all of the supplied electrical energy is converted into heat. To accurately determine thermal impedances of LEDs, the heat dissipated must be computed as the electrical input power minus the radiant power. When an LED is tested for thermal properties with the Semiconductor Thermal Analyzer, Spectra-LED measures the total radiant energy and compensates all steady state and transient thermal measurements for the portion of electrical energy that is converted into radiant energy. The integration of thermal and radiometric measurements allows a detailed analysis of the inter-dependency of junction temperature, radiant emission, and radiant conversion efficiency.
Any of the three ports on the 250 mm diameter integrating sphere may be used as either the detector port or the source port. The included calibrated transfer standard lamp with integrated power supply allows the user to maintain accuracy in making absolute measurements with a light source and holder that were not present during the factory calibration by allowing the user to easily adjust for the change in reflectance. (see complete specifications). Larger spheres are also available for higher power or larger devices.
Temperature Controlled LED Stage
The Spectra-LED includes a temperature controlled, thermo-electric stage (TEC) for controlling the base-plate temperature of the LED while being powered and measured for junction temperature by the Semiconductor Thermal Analyzer and the radiant flux is measured by the Spectra-LED. The 1.6" (40 mm) diameter stage is capable of maintaining a selected temperature from 10 - 70°C for LED heat dissipations up to 30 watts. The stage temperature controller accepts communication commands from the Semiconductor Thermal Analyzer for a seamless integration of test control and data collection. The Temperature Controlled Stage also includes the standard connection interface used in all Analysis Tech test fixtures. The integration of this system allows simultaneous measurement and control of junction temperature, base temperature, and LED heat dissipation during LED spectroradiometry. The TEC Temperature controlled can also be used as a stand-alone test fixture for LED testing using either manual or software control of the temperature set point. The TEC Temperature Controlled stage is completely connectorized for convenient handling and operation.
Complete Spectrometric Measurements
The Spectra-LED system includes SpectrlLight Software for complete, standalone spectrometric measurement capabilities. The Spectroradiometer with SpectrlLight Software provides a wide array of standard irradiance and color measurements from 250 to 1050 nm. Measurements are easy and accurate for spectral irradiance (total, visible, UVA, UVB, UVC, and photopic), correlated color temperature (CCT), chromaticity (x,y,u,v coordinates and CIE display space), dominant and complementary wavelength and color purity. The Spectroradiometer also combines high performance, ease of use, and full measurement integration with the Phase 12 operating software for combined thermal and radiometric measurement and analysis capabilities.
